About Me

Hello and welcome. My name is Christine Carlson and I am the insatiable creature behind What do you crave? I am a free-lance writer, recipe developer, food stylist, and photographer.

I live with my boyfriend—and biggest advocate—Simon and our ill-tempered cat Duke in a little apartment in the San Fernando Valley. City life has yet to feel organic to me, but I’m doing my best to assimilate. I love to feed my family and friends and take photos along the way. I’m constantly trying to maintain balance and calm in my life and I do so through my cooking, writing, and photography.

What do you crave? began as a means to pull all these passions together and create a space where I could soothe all those cravings. This blog is about food and recipes yes, but it’s also about telling stories and connecting with all of you!

About What do you crave?

crave    /’krāv/   verb A powerful desire for something.

From a very young age I cultivated a passion for stories and storytelling. I spent my shy adolescence buried in books, writing my own short stories or poems. I would invent any number of idyllic daydreams to help pass the monotony that stems from a lonely childhood. My life was shaped by the stories I’d tell though various mediums. I cook, I write, I photograph, I travel. I have to feed those cravings.

Food became an early means of expanding my narratives beyond pencil and paper. As a child, I’d watch and often help my mother prepare meals—standing on a chair near the stove, very business-like, absorbing every culinary gem she had to offer. Each dish she made told a story, no matter how simple or complex. Every recipe was tied to a memory or an experience and food was a way to journey back through taste and smell to those moments, however long ago.

My recipes are maps of my childhood, adolescence and so on. My photography tells another story still—lately I find myself drawn to a dark yet vibrant aesthetic. The tone of my writing shifts from casual and sarcastic, to pensive and dreamy. This is no accident or inconsistency, merely a reflection of the story I’m currently living.

This blog is a space to not only satiate food cravings but all cravings; striking imagery, engaging storytelling, travel, and connecting with people. I don’t create solely based on what I want but also what I need. Like the body needs oxygen, and water, and sustenance I need to cook and create and share. This is my story. Join me to see where it leads…

Following you from beautiful Cuenca Ecuador, quality living on a beggars budget. Number 1 retirement destination in the world. Impressive list of dining options, I did a variation of your wine roasted tomatoes in the vegetarian section. Delicious! I’ve been cooking a lot with coconut oil because of the health benefits, any advice with stir frys. Every imaginable vegetable and fruit available here. Let me know when you and your boyfriend Simon want to spend a few weeks here. It’s a free vacation and culinary adventure paid for entirely by me, just get yourself to the airport! 4. Hi Christine!

Greetings from St. Augustine, FL! I am literally craving that carrot soup that you just posted. This winter weather definitely calls for something delicious to keep warm until summer comes back around.

También, podemos hablar español juntos algun día si quieres. Siempre disfruto practicar hablando!

    Hasta luego!

      Hello Parker!

Thank you so much for checking out my blog! The carrot soup was just what I needed on a cold rainy day! Also…Yo no hablo español, porque mi mamá nunca me enseñó! Haha but I can say that. Although, maybe that’s even more of a reason for me to practice with you!

I’m not sure why she didn’t, but I still get on her case about it today! 🙂

Hey Phil! Thank you so much for checking the blog out! I’m still figuring things out but I’m having fun! Now all I have to do is keep up the yoga so I don’t gain 100 pounds!

¡Hola!

Además, yo miraba a Bogotá! ¡ Gracias otra vez!
