I think the worst part of moving is not the packing up your house, cleaning it meticulously, and loading everything into moving trucks. No. It’s actually having to do it all over again in reverse once you arrive at your new place. I was exhausted and stressed and then I realized that it was far from over. I had to unpack and reorganize everything and clean and–it’s a week later and there are still boxes lying around.
I don’t know how Simon and I accumulated so much stuff but we’ve spent days getting rid of or donating things that just have no place in our new (smaller) space. I’m pleased to say that we are approaching the end of the unpacking chaos and the decor part is what’s left. That part I like.
It was in fact what I was doing when I decided to make this whiskey cocktail. I was painting some old bookshelves (far too beach-y for The Valley) when it occurred to me that I hadn’t taken a moment to really sit back and relax, to digest my new space, and clear my head. Priorities! My Heritage Distilling Dual Barrel Collection Rye Whiskey was one of the first things I unpacked after all.
It was raining while I contemplated what sort of whiskey cocktail to make. I figured an Old Fashioned was the perfect libation for relaxation and my contemplative mood. But of course–never content to leave well enough alone–I had to mix things up. I didn’t have an orange but I had tangerines and I thought that tart, bright flavor would go well with honey, as opposed to sugar. Even in the middle of a thunderstorm I had spring on my mind and some fresh rosemary seemed like the perfect herbal addition for this classic cocktail makeover.
The result was smooth, sweet, and fresh. The citrus and herb combination was a pleasant deviation. I sat, paint spattered, sipping my drink and taking a much needed moment to myself to digest the move and relax. I’ve felt better ever since. Thank you whiskey. What cocktail do you make to unwind?
